Numerade - AI Chatbot
I was the lead designer and design manager at Numerade working on creating their first AI chatbot that helps students get online tutor help.
The problem
Our mission and problem statement was to deliver the best AI tutor out there. Education for people in need is expensive and we wanted to give the opportunity for kids to get some help when they otherwise couldn’t afford it.
By building an AI tutor based off of ChatGPT, we would be able to efficiently provide learning material across a wider range of students
Introducing Acechat
The idea was to use our AI algorithms with our back end team to introduce several flows that would live as a widget in our core experiences, including our web and mobile apps. We connected our system to Open AI and worked with our data science and AI team to understand all the different parameters around types of questions asked, all the different response types, etc.
Below you can see how we started to think through multiple different flows within our AI chat experience. This flow we were creating a relationship between primary and secondary interactions in order to help our students get out of being “stuck” on homework assignments
Here is another example where once a student gets to the last step of the prompts, we created very human-friendly dialogue asking our users how they feel, with the mission of making our students felt that we were there to truly help them. And based on how they felt, we had specific prompts we would show them to move them along the process.
We then wanted to create a landing page for our students to easily access our AI tool
We were heavily inspired by ChatGPT at the time, and you can see the connections made. What made us unique is that we created our custom image integrations where each time a student asked a question, we would identify if the question was related to a specific image in their homework material, and display that image to them appropriately.
Future
The future of our AI chatbot was figuring out how to integrate video in a meaningful way. This created a lot of interesting challenges including how to incorporate AI text on top of the video, as well as figuring out all of the wonderful constraints that come with video sizing
